If you are going to validate, it should really be after reading the
bytes, rather than just assuming the in-memory is serialized out
correctly. This doubles the --dry-run processing time on the local
system, but it is still only a few seconds. And it should add a
negligible amount of time on a remote operation.
I'm wondering if there is room to tune the KnitIndex code.
