Description of the change
Update autotools configuration a bit
Do not use deprecated macros
Use new libtool syntax
Generate xz tarballs

The Ubuntu Distributed Development tools are still using gz instead of xz. So it's easier if we build in that format. But otherwise looks good. I'll merge and fix that on merge.
