By Kevin W Monroe on 2015-10-22: fail fast if we are on an unsupported arch; set default installer names and sha1sums based on arch so we always validate the sum; ensure we have expected config opts; rework removal logic (no need for 2 removal functions); remove alternatives symlink if software is removed or broken; add/cleanup status messages where appropriate
