Revert last set of experimental changes (as Len suggested on the mailing list) and prepare for a test upload to the ppa.

OK - back to the drawing board. It seems I can't merge the reverted commit in bzr. I wish we used git!
Cancelling this. I will have to manually alter the files to revert the last commit.
