Description of the change
This fixes an issue Colin noticed where we are causing too much noise with eventstat (the select call with a 5 second timeout is causing 12 interrupts per second.

Conceptually, looks good, I'm not a python hacker, so I can't give much
input in the code review though.
I'm happy with the proposed solution.
